There’s something really special about making your own little character from yarn…

This lamb was actually the very first design in my collection - the one that

started everything.

She’s soft, simple, and beginner-friendly, but also gives you the chance to practise different stitches as you go.

If you’re following along from YouTube - welcome ♡ And if not, you can also find the step-by-step video tutorial here:👉 Free Crochet Pattern (Part 1)

🧵 Before you start

This pattern is written for confident beginners, and you’ll be working in continuous rounds.

A few quick notes before we begin:

  • Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds

  • Plush yarn can make stitches harder to see - take your time

  • Stuff as you go for the best shape

  • The arms and legs are crocheted in (so less sewing!)

✨ This design was created as a practice piece, combining multiple stitches in one project

🧶 Materials

You can use any yarn you like, but here’s what I used:

  • Yarnsmiths Chenille Chunky

  • Crochet hook 5.5mm

  • Stuffing

  • Yarn needle

  • Stitch marker

  • Scissors

Optional:

  • Safety eyes (or embroider for a baby-safe version)

  • Embroidery thread

🧠 How to read the pattern

This is important if you’re newer 👇

  • ( ) = repeat the sequence

    → e.g. (sc, inc) x6 = repeat that whole sequence 6 times

  • [ ] = work everything inside into the SAME stitch

    → e.g. [sc, inc]

This will come up later, so keep it in mind ✨

🐑 Part 1 – The Lamb

*PS. Use secondary colour (GREY) when BOLD*

Ears (make 2)

  • 6 sc in MR

  • 2 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc

Fasten off and pull through to create a slight fold.

Arms (make 2)

  • 6 sc in MR

  • (1 sc, inc) x3

  • sc around for 2 rounds

  • 5 sc, 2 dec

Stuff the arms

  • 1 sc, 3 dec

Fasten off

💡 Tip: mark stitches on the final round - this helps later when crocheting them into the body.

Legs (make 2)

  • 6 sc in MR

  • inc in each stitch

  • back post sc around

  • sc around

  • (4 sc, dec) x2

  • sc around

Fasten off first leg 👉 Do NOT fasten off second leg

Body (joining legs)

This is easier to follow visually - so I really recommend using the video here:👉 Joining Legs

But in short:

  • Chain 1 from your second leg and join to the first leg

  • Work around both legs to form the body base

  • Continue crocheting in the round to build the body

  • Decrease slightly to shape

  • Begin stuffing

💡 The arms will be crocheted in during the next rounds

🐑 Head (brief version)

  • Increase to 30 stitches

  • Work several rounds evenly

  • Add eyes between rows 4–5

  • Crochet in ears while working

✨ You’ll also add loop stitches here to create the fluffy texture

👉 This part is much easier to understand visually, so follow along with the video for placement and tension. Video here.

🎀 Details

You’ll also create:

  • Dress (with frill detail)

  • Bow

  • Mushroom parasol 🍄

These are covered in Part 2 ✨

🧸 Assembly (simple guidance)

  • Ears and arms are already attached

  • Embroider facial features

  • Sew bow onto back

  • Attach mushroom slightly to one side of the head

💡 Positioning makes a BIG difference here - take your time with it

✨ A note on this pattern

This free version is designed to help you learn and follow along - especially alongside the video.

If you’d prefer:

  • a clean layout

  • step-by-step structure

  • printable format

  • and a smoother making experience
