Front & Back Only Stitch
Working the Stitch:
Insert hook through the front loop only or back loop only
Complete stitch as normal
What is it used for?
FLO creates texture, flexible edges and decorative shaping in crochet projects.
BLO creates ribbing and textured lines in crochet projects.
It is often used when the front loop from the stitch is intended for something else. For example, when adding a dress skirt later on.
Tip:
The front loop is the one closest to you.
The back loop is the loop furthest away from you.
These stitches are usually made using the same stitch you are already working with (unless stated otherwise). If your pattern is using single crochet (sc), you will make a single crochet in the front or back loops. If using half double crochet (hdc), you will make a half double crochet in the front or back loops, and so on.
These stitches often refers to the whole round, whereas FL/BL can refer only to specific stitches in the round - make sure to read your pattern carefully.
